Low-Impact Strength Training for Weight Loss on Your Total Gym

Maria Sollon, MS, CSCS, PES

The heat is on, and it is the perfect time to get your body moving into summer.

When temperatures rise, your body is already under added stress. Heart rate climbs faster, dehydration sets in quicker, and fatigue can show up sooner than expected. This is where low-impact strength training becomes not just effective, but smart.

This beginner-friendly Total Gym routine is designed to build strength, improve control, and support fat loss without excessive strain on your joints or nervous system.

Why Low-Impact Strength Training Is Effective for Weight Loss

Low-impact does not mean low intensity. It means controlled, joint-friendly movement that keeps at least one point of contact stable while muscles do the work.

Benefits of Low-Impact Strength Training

In warmer conditions, this matters. Your body does not need more impact. It needs better control, efficient output, and smart resistance.

Why the Total Gym Is Ideal for Low-Impact Strength Training

The Total Gym uses bodyweight resistance combined with an adjustable incline. This creates a closed-chain training environment, meaning your body is supported while it moves.

Benefits of Using a Total Gym

  • Adjustable resistance with incline levels
  • Smooth, controlled movement
  • Full range of motion
  • Continuous core engagement
  • Joint-friendly strength training

You get strength, stability, and control in one system without the wear and tear of traditional high-impact training.

Best Low-Impact Total Gym Exercises for Weight Loss

Squat Variations

Sit back through the hips and press through the heels. This strengthens the lower body while reinforcing proper hip mechanics and reducing knee strain.

Bridge Lifts

Drive through the heels to lift the hips. This targets the glutes and posterior chain, which support the spine and improve overall movement efficiency.

Pull-Ups

Lead with the chest and pull the elbows down. This builds upper body strength while improving posture and back activation.

Push-Ups

Maintain one straight line from head to heels. This develops pressing strength and core stability without overloading the shoulders.

Plank Hold

Engage the core and lengthen the spine. This trains deep stabilizing muscles that protect the spine and improve control.

Seated Torso Rotation

Rotate through the torso with control. This enhances core strength and mobility while keeping the hips stable.

Seated Row

Pull the handles toward the body and squeeze the shoulder blades together. This strengthens the upper back and supports better posture.

Chest Press

Press forward with control while keeping the shoulders relaxed. This builds upper body strength with reduced joint stress.

Serving Circles

Move the arms in smooth circles. This improves shoulder stability and coordination while engaging the core.

Pull-Over Crunches

Lift through the upper body as the arms move overhead. This combines core strength with upper body control for integrated movement.

Use this routine as a foundation to build your workouts. Focus on control, stay consistent, and allow your strength to develop with purpose.

Train smart for the season. Stay strong without the strain.

Frequently Asked Questions About Low-Impact Strength Training

Is low-impact strength training good for weight loss?

Yes. Low-impact strength training helps burn calories while preserving lean muscle mass, which supports a healthy metabolism. Combined with proper nutrition, it can be an effective way to lose weight while reducing stress on your joints.

Can beginners use the Total Gym for weight loss?

Absolutely. The Total Gym is ideal for beginners because the adjustable incline allows you to control resistance while learning proper movement patterns. You can gradually increase the challenge as your strength improves.

How often should I do low-impact strength training?

Most beginners benefit from performing strength workouts two to four times per week with at least one recovery day between sessions targeting the same muscle groups.

Does low-impact exercise build muscle?

Yes. When enough resistance is applied and exercises are performed with proper form and progression, low-impact training can build strength and increase lean muscle just as effectively as many traditional resistance exercises.

What incline should I use on my Total Gym?

The ideal incline depends on your experience level and the exercise. Start with a lower incline to master technique, then gradually increase the resistance as you become stronger while maintaining good form.

Is the Total Gym good for people with joint pain?

Many people with joint discomfort prefer the Total Gym because its gliding design reduces impact while allowing muscles to work through a full range of motion. If you have an injury or chronic condition, consult your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise program.

Can I do this workout during hot summer weather?

Yes. Low-impact strength training is an excellent option during warmer months because it places less stress on your cardiovascular system while still providing an effective strength-building workout. Stay hydrated, exercise in a cool environment when possible, and adjust intensity based on how you feel.
